This substantial specialised hospital building for the secure mental treatment of adolescents is part of a large hospital campus but, uniquely on the site, faces a main road. Working on interiors with healthcare specialists, P+HS Architects, Robert Adam concentrated on the exterior, in particular the challenge of ensuring that the main entrance and a long wall without openings did not appear to be hostile. This was achieved with a combination of familiar classical entrance doors, modelled stonework and chequered brickwork.
