The master plan for a new urban neighbourhood in the Port of Leith, outside Edinburgh, was taken over from an earlier, partially-built plan as the single-use areas were no longer viable. A more complex, traditional plan was brought forward that increased the site value significantly, was responsive to local climatic conditions and was more flexible over time but comprised the same number of 4,000 homes. The plan has varied areas with mixed housing types and differing street and pedestrian routes. The plan includes major public spaces, education, significant commercial space and retail. The master plan pioneered objective non-stylistic codes that have subsequently become widely used.
